Overview

Dentbird Batch is a new automated large file processing solution for busy dental labs & organizations

It utilizes Dentbird Crown’s AI technology to batch process and design multiple files in a sequence.

Objectives

Addressing industry needs

Meet demand for faster order fulfillment with AI-assisted batch processing to reduce manual work.

Boosting user efficiency

Enable quick bulk reviews with minimal edits, allowing users to manage multiple cases efficiently.

Supporting business goals

Increase user engagement and credit sales by making dental crown exports faster and more efficient.

Challenge

1.

Varied use cases across labs and clinics

Every dental lab and clinic has different workflows and preferences. Since this program is new to industry, focusing on adaptability essential.

2.

Emerging technology in digital dentistry

Many users were unfamiliar with AI-assisted design, necessitating a simple and intuitive user interface to minimize the learning curve.

Research

To understand our target users and shape the design, I worked with insights from interviews conducted by our sales team and collaborated closely with our product manager. Together, we identified key user groups and reviewed competitor products like 3Shape Automate to spot industry standards and find areas for innovation.

Target users

Large dental lab owners & dental center directors

Large dental lab owners &
dental center directors

Key needs:

  • Efficient workflow management.

  • Tools for handling high-volume cases.

  • Streamlining workflows to handle high patient volume.

  • Minimal time spent on simple cases with in house lab.

User interviews

Through interviews conducted with large denter center owner (Roydent) and a dentist owner to understand the neeeds and wants to help them expedite their work process and there were some take aways through the interview.

Maintaining familiar workflows

Keep file organization consistent to reduce learning curve.

Preview functionality for accuracy

A need for 2D/3D previews to enhance case accuracy and reduce review time.

Customizable parameter-based groups

Flexibility in grouping files by specific parameters to facilitate high-volume case management.

Competitor research

Due to the rarity of dental 3D CAD products with mass upload features, 3Shape Automate was the main point of comparison. While it performs well, it has notable usability gaps that informed the design.

No saved preferences

Users must reset settings with each upload, slowing down their workflow.

Limited design control

Users can only approve or reject designs, with no option for small modifications.

Poor progress tracking

It’s hard for users to monitor file processing status in real-time.

Disjointed review process

Single and bulk-case reviews are separated, making the experience less cohesive.

How might we

How might we design a product that improves efficiency for dental lab technicians by simplifying workflows, enhancing usability, and offering greater control over processes?

Ideation & iterations

Designing an optimized user flow

Focused on simplicity and efficiency to accommodate users’ need for quick processing and export.

Iterative design process

Design for this project went through multiple iterations based on feedback from internal teams. I refined the user flow to simplify the modification process and ensure the design met the needs of busy dental labs.

Challenge (Previous)

Originally, the 'Completed' section was comprised of four tabs, each corresponding to a different status type for file categorization. Also, users had to click "Review" to see any visual results of the files processing.

Iteration (After)

Different statuses were summed up to "Reviewing" and "Exported" and redesigned list with thumbnails for users to focus on quick review and export.

Outcome

Streamlined file management for diverse workflows

Simplifies the task of uploading and organizing large batches of files, offering parameter-based categorization to adapt to varied lab needs.

Real time progress visibility for seamless workflows

Provides instant updates on task statuses, helping users monitor ongoing processes and address issues without disrupting operations.

Integrated review and validation tools for streamlined workflows

Integrates file previews and comprehensive data in one platform for swift validation, refinement, and batch-processing evaluations, enhancing user productivity and uniformity.

Impact

Crown export increased

Since its launch, Dentbird Batch has shown steady growth, achieving a milestone of 1,900 exports by December 2024.

This tool has increasingly been adopted by dental clinics, streamlining their processes by enabling the automatic creation of dental prosthetics in batches.
